Jasmine Tea

This graphic novel project delves into the collective consciousness of Chinese immigrants relocating to Taiwan in the aftermath of the Chinese Civil War. My approach to this collective consciousness is through personal narratives, influenced deeply by my upbringing in Taiwan, which instilled in me a curiosity about the emotional landscape of Mainland Chinese immigrants.

Each cup of tea tells a person’s story, whether it’s the subtlety of the tea, the sweetness, or the bitter aftertaste. Tea can hold homesickness, love, comfort, regrets, and many many more.”

 

The genesis of illustrating sentimental narratives with tea as the central motif stems from my grandmother’s ritual of having a cup of Jasmine tea every morning. This practice was her way of remembering and clinging to the memories of her home in China, as she migrated to Taiwan with my grandfather during the Chinese Civil War.
